Top 5 Places To Go in Greece

Outside of Athens, there are a lot of cool destinations in Greece.  For the mainland sites, it may be most convenient to book a bus tour, which will take care of hotel reservations also.

1. Santorini - If you only visit one island, this is the one.  The caldera is one of the natural wonders - take the boat tour.  Avoid June and July if possible to avoid the mass of tourists and nightclubs.

2. Nafplio - this charming fishing village is just what you'll need after the big city bustle of Athens.

3. Meteora - maybe not for toddlers or carried infants, as some of the climb up to the monsteries, set atop pinnacles of rock, is pretty steep.  However, Meteora must be seen to be believed.

4. Delphi - another location whose photos don't do it justice.  Again, toddlers may have trouble with the ascent, and if they are bad about running off, Delphi is a dangerous spot.

5. Sounio - an easy couple hours from Athens, the temple to Poseidon is stunningly located on a promontory above the sea.  And the affiliated restaurant has great mezes.

Honorable Mention:
Thermopylae - fans of the movie 300 will want to see the "hot gates," and the seaside towns and general area are nice for everyone.  Especially for boys, who someday will get a kick out of knowing they were here.

Rhodes - Three of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are in Greece, with the Colossus being at Rhodes.  It's a long trip just for that, but once there the tombs of Crusader Knights fire the imagination.

Olympia - the birthplace of the Olympic Games.  There's a saying that you're either a Delphi person or an Olympia person, and I'm definitely a Delphi person (plus it's easier to get to).  But hey, you might be an Olympia person, so you might combine it with a trip through Corinth ending at Nafplio.
