Ireland - first and foremost, check out:

We're back, and I'm still processing the whole amazing trip. So I've brought a few photos back to whet your whistle - of a few not-to-miss places if you're Ireland-bound.

Topics that may come up in the next half-dozen or so posts include:

  • The tot's take on our helpful GPS navigator (and the fact that she's now "navigating" us everywhere in the car, with a British accent).

  • Really good eating on a tight budget.

  • The Ring of Beara - a quieter alternative to the Ring of Kerry, and easier on the kid.

  • The Blur of Kells and how not to visit Dublin.

  • The Newgrange megolithic passage tomb.  (30,000 people register annually for one of 15 spots inside during the solstice - and it IS really that cool.)

  • Flying with Fools (or, my toddler behaves better than your twenty-something).

  • And… how friends make the world go round.

Great photos! I'm especially interested in how you managed to eat well on a budget. When we went to Ireland on a tight budget, it was fish and chips, fish and chips, fish and chips. And potatoes. Inexpensive, yes, but not exactly well-rounded!
:)

Re: Ireland - first and foremost, check out:

That's a great question - and I think we only had fish and chips once this trip (much to our daughter's dismay).

I'm going to do a post on dining-by-farmers'-market, but the short answer is that, aside from one night in a hotel, and one night in a hostel, we rented a place with a kitchen (those who know me are not shocked by this) and packed lunches. It wasn't much more work, and the few times we ate out, we were able to do nicer meals because of it. The hostel also had kitchen facilities available, and was very family-friendly.

Our apartment-rental was not in any central area, and I don't think we would do it again, but there are plenty of similar resources - much like our favorite place to stay in Paris, there are self-catering accommodations appearing all over the place.

Hey, this is too cool for school!! I grew up in Navan, which is the town right next to Tara. Visited both Tara and Newgrange many times during childhood (when Newgrange was just a field). I love your photos!

Hey Michelle! Great to see you here. We stopped in Navan for some juice and biscuits. It was hard, after visiting Newgrange, not to look at every low hill and think "hmmm." This was one of the best parts of our trip - I'm glad you like the pics!
